This award was created in 2006 from the generosity of a former staff member of Jennings and benefactor, Barbara Kozel who worked with Sister Mary Philomena. Barbara wanted to honor both Sister Mary Philomena in naming the award as well as Culinary Services Staff Members who exemplified all that Sister Mary Philomena represented.
Sister Mary Philomena could be described by all who knew her to be a loving and joyful Sister of the Holy Spirit. Sister was the definition of hospitable. Sister was a talented epicurean who had a flair for creating beautiful dishes and paying attention to the desires of the residents. She knew each person’s dietary needs including their favorite foods and ethnic culinary preferences. This award is meant to highlight a culinary staff member who exemplifies the spirit of Sister Philomena not only in how they perform their duties but more in how they serve others. She was an example of the saints in not doing for others for the praise that might come but simply in making others feel special and cared for. You might say she invented person-centered care!

Jennings' "Sister Mary Philomena Award" is presented annually to a Culinary Services staff member who exemplifies the mission and values of Jennings according to, but not limited to, the qualities listed below:
All nomination forms must include the nominator in order to be valid. A staff member, family member or resident may nominate more than one candidate but a separate form must be used for each nomination. Nomination forms should be completed and returned to Human Resources no later than Monday, November 18, 2024.
Despite living with Parkinson’s Disease, Dave says he is determined to be the best he can be. “Being here, there are other things in life than being in a wheelchair. This is a place that allows me to still keep doing.”
