Small House Practices

Small House Practices

Marian Gardens adopts nationally recognized small house principles, a model of care that prioritizes small, home-like environments, person-directed choices, and empowered staff. Home to 18 residences, the smaller scale also means residents build stronger relationships with staff and neighbors, decreasing loneliness and encouraging meaningful social interaction.

Key principles include:

  • Person-Directed Care: Residents are at the center of decision-making, with individualized routines and choices.
  • Natural Home Setting: The physical environment is designed to feel like a real home, with communal kitchens, living rooms, and private bedrooms.
  • Empowered Staff: Direct care workers, known as Shahbazim, have expanded roles and autonomy, fostering deeper relationships with residents.
  • Small Scale: Limited group size encourages community, familiarity, and personalized attention.

Natural Home Environment

The physical environment of Marian Gardens is intentionally designed with the open floor plan and architecture of a personal home, avoiding an institutional feeling. Features such as an open kitchen, family-style dining, fireplace and accessible outdoor spaces offer both comfort and independence. Private bedrooms and bathrooms respect residents' dignity and privacy, while shared spaces encourage community living. The familiarity of a natural home environment reduce confusion and agitation, especially for residents with cognitive impairments like dementia. Feeling at home can also have therapeutic benefits, promoting relaxation and a sense of security. Residents are more likely to engage in activities, entertain visitors, and participate in community life when they feel at home.
