Going with the Flo!

Talk about a resident who knows how to "go with the flow!" Flo decided to call Jennings at Brecksville home, then was embraced by the community she formed here.

Flo has been a resident at Jennings at Brecksville for almost five years. She moved in with her husband, John, in June of 2018. She and John first met at a Polka dance at Sachsenheim Hall on Denison in Lakewood. About a year later, on July 8, 1950, they were married. They welcomed seven children into their family, three of them live in Missouri, Alabama, and Delaware, with four remaining local in Cleveland. She is grandma to seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Her apartment is adorned with beautifully hung photographs, cards, memorabilia, and gifts all a testimonial of the love from such a large family. One of her favorite pieces, is a sign that reads, “Go with the flow,” which is a saying that John would tell her when times were difficult.

Before moving to Jennings at Brecksville, John had spent a month at the Cleveland Clinic, following a triple bypass. After a month of rehab, he was walking again and remained stable for a few years until one day, he kept mentioning his side hurt, while clenching his abdomen. After rushing him to MetroHealth hospital, they were told they should not return home and Flo became a fulltime caregiver, which was challenging, especially after having hip surgery. “I couldn’t do anything at the house anymore. The kids knew there was too much to manage,” she recalls. So her son Jim and daughter, Kathy, started looking for assisted living communities. They were immediately impressed with Jennings at Brecksville, “it was the best out of several places.”

Flo fondly remembers her first impressions of Jennings at Brecksville, especially that “it was clean, orderly, and presentable." She mentions her favorite activities at Jennings at Brecksville is playing Bingo and Pokeno - "it’s nice to have something to do.”

Eight months after moving in, John passed away. Flo found comfort in a supportive community of friends and staff and still recites the saying, “Go with the flow,” until this day. She attributes her life getting easier while living at Jennings at Brecksville due to the superb staff and building amenities. She loves calling Jennings at Brecksville home because she has so many new friends, delicious meals, staff that cares and listens to new ideas and suggestions to ensure resident satisfaction. When asked what one word comes to mind to describe Jennings at Brecksville, she said, “exceptional!”
