Family Update March 19, 2020

Dear Residents and Family members,

We hope you are all healthy and managing well as each day brings change. Our priority is the health and wellness of individuals we serve and the staff who serves them. Jennings staff, like the rest of the world, continues to monitor the ever-changing COVID-19 situation. We are in communication with local, state and national organizations for strategies to detect and prevent the spread of COVID-19 as well as other viruses. The elderly and people with compromised immune systems are the most vulnerable. Jennings has no reported cases of COVID-19 at
this time.

Precaution screening
Jennings screens every staff member and clinician as they enter the building, including taking their temperature; we have been doing so since the week of March 9. We send home anyone who has 1) been in contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 or lives with someone who is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or who has tested positive, 2) traveled in prohibited areas or 3) has a fever of 100.4 or higher.

Independent living
In accordance with Ohio Governor DeWine and health experts, Jennings asks that residents living independently in villa homes, cottage homes and apartments remain in these homes. We have disabled electronic keys for visitors as well. We recommend that individuals living independently DO NOT have visitors or leave the apartment unless there is a necessity. If a visitor is necessary, we suggest one family member or caregiver at a time, going directly to the resident’s home. Again, the goal is physical distancing and precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep us all well. Any person who visits must contact Jennings immediately if in the last 14 days they 1) have been in contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 or lives with someone who is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or who has tested positive, 2) have traveled in prohibited areas or 3) have a fever of 100.4 or higher.

Assisted living and nursing home residences
No visitors will be allowed inside to visit residents in assisted living or nursing home residences at any of our locations.

Appointments
Individuals living in the nursing home or assisted living residences may only go out for medically necessary appointments as deemed by the director of nursing. Our staff is making those arrangements, and nurses are screening residents upon return.

Communal dining
We have discontinued dining together in our dining rooms. In nursing homes and assisted living, we are delivering meals to resident suites. For those who require assistance eating or who live in memory care residences, we are safely distancing residents from one another for dining with supervision and/or assistance. Those living independently who use the dining service are now able to only take the meals back to their residences.

Life enriching activities
Group activities, including all intergenerational activities, were canceled until further notice. In nursing home and assisted living residences, our staff continues activities with one-on-one visiting and delivering items such as word searches, art supplies and puzzles. We are working creatively to offer fun and interesting opportunities every day. We have also been helping residents with video-based calls. On Friday, 3/20 we will post directions on our web site about how to set up video calls for families who do not yet know how. In independent living settings, our staff is working to help residents to access resources and supports they might need.

Preparation IF an individual tests positive for COVID-19
Jennings has prepared a plan if a resident/patient tests positive for COVID-19. We have designated an isolation area, and we have designated staff members to care for individuals who have symptoms or undergo testing for COVID-19. Again, Jennings has no reported cases of COVID-19 at this time.

Deliveries
Nursing home and assisted living residences: we are accepting deliveries for residents at the main entrance outside the locked door Monday through Friday from 10:00a.m. until 2:00p.m. Please be sure to mark the bag or box with the resident’s name and suite number. If you have documents to deliver, please place them in an envelope to leave them with the resident name and suite number or staff member name department.

Maintenance requests
If your loved one talks to you about maintenance requests, you can now log it in remotely. For residents living in a residence on Jennings’ Garfield Heights campus, Jennings at Brecksville, or Jennings at Library Court, please visit www.jenningsohio.org/maintenance. If your loved one lives at Jennings at Notre Dame Village, please visit www.notredamevillage.org/maintenance . Once you complete the form, the request will be logged into our maintenance system.

Environmental services
The environmental services team in all areas are working to keep everything disinfected. They are aware of high-touch areas and sanitizing more frequently, as well as adding more hand sanitizing opportunities. Independent living residents have the opportunity to order housekeeping services; if a resident is using these services the housekeeper will check with the resident to ensure they are well before entering the residence.

Mass
You are likely already aware that public Catholic Mass has been canceled throughout each Diocese in Ohio. At the Garfield Heights campus, our priests continue to celebrate Mass for residents to watch on the campus cable channel. Jennings at Brecksville residents will enjoy Mass from the Diocese of Cleveland on their campus cable channel. Jennings at Notre Dame Village assisted living residents may choose to watch Mass on television, and we have sent a link to independent living residents to be able to watch daily streamed from the Diocese of Cleveland. At this time, we are not distributing the Eucharist.

Hygiene
We are reminding residents to keep washing hands often, and especially after coughing and sneezing. We encourage them to use hand sanitizer, when needed.

Service changes
Jennings Adult Day Services in Garfield Heights are temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 precautions. The Learning Circle child care center in Garfield Heights remains open for only Jennings staff, health care workers and first responders. The area, child care staff members, and the children are completely separate from adults we serve.

We know this is not an easy time. We are reassuring residents that these precautions are in place to help us all stay healthy. The rooms are spacious and the apartments are very bright. It is a relief knowing your loved one is safe and happy. It was definitely the right move for my father.
